On Saturday, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced that they have released Bangladesh's fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, following directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

In an official statement, KKR confirmed that the decision was made after receiving directions from the BCCI, which oversees the IPL. They stated that the release was executed after all necessary procedures and consultations were fulfilled as per league guidelines. The board has also permitted the team to sign a replacement player, with further announcements due shortly.

Previously, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that the board had instructed KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman due to “recent developments.” He also clarified that the franchise would be allowed to acquire a replacement according to IPL policy.

This move comes amid a political situation concerning the inclusion of the Bangladeshi pacer. The matter received attention following allegations of violence against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, igniting widespread criticism regarding Mustafizur’s selection for IPL 2026.

Mustafizur was acquired by KKR for ₹9.20 crore during the IPL auction last December, making his departure a notable change as the new season approaches.

In response to the announcement, BJP leader Sangeet Singh Som welcomed the decision, labeling it an alignment with public sentiment. He also commented on KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, asserting that the action reflects an understanding of the country's feelings.

As the IPL 2026 season nears, KKR is anticipated to announce a replacement player, adjusting their roster in light of the BCCI’s directive.
