Two 19-year-old men have been charged after a taxi driver was shot dead in North Battleford
Kim Keon Hee, the former First Lady of South Korea, has been sentenced to 20 months in prison due to corruption, as determined by the Seoul Central District Court on Wednesday.
The court established that Kim accepted lavish gifts, including a Graff diamond necklace and a Chanel handbag, from the Unification Church in return for political favors. The judges ruled that she exploited her role as First Lady for personal gain.
Through her lawyers, Kim expressed her remorse, stating she “humbly accepts” the court's verdict and regrets the public turmoil caused.
Prosecutors had sought a 15-year sentence on accusations of stock price manipulation, unlawful political funding, and bribery. However, the court acquitted her on two charges, citing insufficient evidence. Prosecutors plan to appeal, deeming the sentence overly lenient.
Kim has been detained since August after the court sanctioned her arrest, citing fears she might tamper with evidence. The scandals surrounding her significantly impacted former President Yoon Suk Yeol, harming his approval ratings during his term.
Yoon Suk Yeol was ousted after declaring martial law in December 2024 and sentenced to five years in prison earlier this month for associated allegations. He is now awaiting a ruling on a rebellion charge that may lead to life imprisonment or even capital punishment.
Investigators have confirmed that Kim was not implicated in the martial law initiative. Authorities assert Yoon had planned for over a year to enforce military rule against political rivals, though no evidence links Kim to this decision.
Experts predict that Yoon faces a likelihood of receiving a life sentence or prolonged imprisonment, considering South Korea has not executed anyone since 1997.
