Rookie Jacob Fowler Stuns Penguins with 33 Saves, Canadiens Win 4-2

Post by : Mina Carter

Jacob Fowler delivered a sensational performance in his NHL debut, making 33 saves to guide the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night. The rookie goalie received strong support from his teammates, as Alexandre Texier, Brendan Gallagher, and Cole Caufield gave Montreal a 3-0 lead through the first two periods. Oliver Kapanen added a goal in the third to secure the win and help the Canadiens end a two-game losing streak.

For Pittsburgh, Bryan Rust scored, and Erik Karlsson contributed a power-play goal. Sidney Crosby assisted on Karlsson’s goal and is now four points away from surpassing Mario Lemieux’s franchise record, with Lemieux ranking ninth in NHL history. Tristan Jarry stopped 25 shots for the Penguins, who suffered their third consecutive loss, ending a four-game point streak.

Fowler, 21, was recalled from Laval of the AHL after Montreal allowed six goals in a loss to Tampa Bay earlier in the week. The 2023 first-round pick impressed with his composure, especially during the Penguins’ power-play chances, stopping several attempts from Crosby and Karlsson.

Texier opened the scoring early by stripping Kris Letang at the blue line and firing a wrist shot over Jarry’s glove. Gallagher extended the lead to 2-0 in the second period with a precise wrist shot from Lane Hutson’s pass. Caufield added a power-play goal to make it 3-0. Pittsburgh’s Rust cut the deficit to 3-1, but Kapanen responded just 15 seconds later, restoring Montreal’s three-goal advantage and sealing the victory.

Fowler, who played two seasons at Boston College before joining Laval, posted a 10-5 record with a .919 save percentage and a 2.09 goals-against average. His remarkable debut signals a promising start to his NHL career and a boost for the Canadiens’ goaltending depth.
