In a striking case of fraud, an Italian individual has received a seven-month prison sentence in Singapore after trying to deceive a watch dealer regarding a genuine Rolex timepiece he mistakenly believed was fake. This incident has gained significant attention due to its ironic turn of events.
Deepak Singh, the accused, admitted guilt for his attempted scam. The court determined that his intention to con constituted a crime, irrespective of the outcome that revealed the watch's authenticity.
The saga began in early 2025 when Singh purchased a rare Rolex GMT Saru for about €55,000, thinking he had a lucrative item. Initially, he aimed to profit from its resale.
However, after learning that only a handful of such watches exist, his suspicion of counterfeiting grew. Furthermore, a watch retailer insinuated that the case had been tampered with, leading him to believe he was duped.
Convinced of this, Singh traveled to Singapore in November 2025 to offload the watch at a local retailer. He sought to trade it for three other Rolex watches while using a forged passport to hide his identity during the transaction.
Post-transaction, the retailer also doubted the legitimacy of the watch and notified the police. Singh's attempt to escape Singapore was thwarted at Changi Airport, where he was apprehended.
The situation reached an unexpected resolution when the watch was examined by an official Rolex service center, proving its authenticity. Despite there being no actual loss, the court upheld his conviction, underscoring the notion of an impossible crime.
