The approval of a fresh Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank underscores the rapidly evolving circumstances in the region. Initially a small and unapproved outpost, it has now evolved in just a month into a fully recognized settlement termed Yatziv, situated atop a hill that overlooks the Palestinian town of Beit Sahour, close to Jerusalem.
On Monday, a gathering of Israeli settlers and government representatives convened to commemorate the occasion. Loud music accompanied ongoing construction as Israeli soldiers secured the area while families enjoyed food together, celebrating what they deemed a historic event. In the valley below, life in Beit Sahour went on, resonating with calls to prayer from local mosques.
Many settlers view this moment as the culmination of extensive efforts. They have aspired to this land, asserting its historical significance for Jews and its role in a broader settlement framework around Jerusalem. Over time, they have obstructed plans to establish a hospital for Palestinian children on this land, patiently waiting for an opportune political climate to stake their claim.
This opportunity presented itself swiftly. In December, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced the endorsement of Yatziv alongside 18 other outposts. Smotrich, a vocal supporter of the settler movement, has declared settlers' intentions to remain indefinitely and dismissed the possibilities of a future Palestinian state in the area.
Settlers have felt emboldened by the prevailing political environment. Since late 2022, Israel’s far-right government has actively championed the expansion of settlements. The return of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency and a lethal incident near the vicinity in November also galvanized settlers in pushing their narrative forward.
From the Palestinian viewpoint, the extension of settlements is profoundly distressing. Most of the international community regards Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal under international law. Palestinians contend that these settlements infringe upon their land, hinder movement, and complicate their quest for an independent and cohesive state. The West Bank is viewed as a fundamental segment of their envisioned nation.
The grounds where Yatziv now stands hold a contentious legacy. Almost two decades prior, proposals emerged to construct a child hospital there, backed by international support. Settlers vehemently opposed this plan, which eventually faltered. Later, the area transformed into an Israeli military base, facilitating settlers' establishment of a lasting presence.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert remarked that this transition in land usage was pivotal. Once designated a military zone, it became less complicated to convert it into a settlement. He also pointed out that the current Israeli leadership is charting a dramatically different course from past initiatives aimed at fostering cooperation with Palestinians.
The swift endorsement of Yatziv illustrates the rapid acceleration of settlement development. For settlers, it marks a significant achievement. Conversely, for Palestinians, it signals a further erosion of hopes for a two-state resolution. As settlements expand, the already heightened tensions continue to complicate the path to peace.
