Israel Greenlights 4G Network Upgrade for Palestinians in the West Bank

Post by : Sean Carter

In a significant development, Israel has granted approval for Palestinian mobile operators in the West Bank to transition to fourth-generation (4G) mobile networks. This announcement was made on Tuesday by the Israeli Communications Ministry, marking a vital move towards improving connectivity for the Palestinian population.

Leading Palestinian telecom providers, Jawwal and Ooredoo, have partnered with Swedish infrastructure firm Ericsson to facilitate the network upgrade. These agreements received approval from Israel on Sunday, initiating the upgrade process.

Palestinian mobile networks had initially launched 3G services in the West Bank back in 2018, after years of restrictions on local 3G networks. The green light for 4G services comes under a framework agreement reached in 2022 between the Palestinian Authority and Israel, which also includes plans for introducing 5G technology in the future. The upgrade is projected to take up to six months to complete.

Currently, Palestinian providers face competition from Israeli companies that already operate faster 5G networks. Israel is in the process of phasing out older 2G and 3G services and has prompted users to transition to devices that support 4G and 5G for continuous connectivity.

This endorsement for 4G networks is crucial in closing the technology divide between Israeli and Palestinian mobile services. It promises to enhance internet speeds, improve communication, and promote both economic and social progress for individuals in the West Bank.

While immediate equivalency with Israel’s 5G speeds may not be achieved, the upgrade is anticipated to provide Palestinians with more reliable and faster connectivity for personal and business applications.

This initiative underscores ongoing attempts to modernize the region’s digital landscape, ensuring technological advancements persist despite political and security challenges.
