Iran has officially called upon the United Nations to take robust measures against the United States and Israel, holding both countries accountable for a series of military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in June. This request comes as recent communications between Washington and Tehran hint at a cautious willingness to renew talks.
In a correspondence directed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN Security Council, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi emphasized the need for responsibility to be assigned to both Washington and Tel Aviv for what he denounced as “acts of aggression” against Iran. He called for reparations, which include compensation for the damages incurred during the attacks.
Araghchi referenced former US President Donald Trump’s admission on November 6 that he had sanctioned Israel’s initial strike against Iranian nuclear sites as evidence of direct US involvement. “President Trump and his administration hold criminal accountability for the attacks on June 13,” Araghchi stated, urging UN intervention based on international law.
Reports from Iran suggest that these strikes led to over 900 fatalities, among them senior military personnel. Tehran maintains that these incidents constituted a direct military operation by the United States, not just passive support for Israel, demanding justice for the impacted individuals.
Despite the rising tensions, both the US and Iran have shown readiness for diplomatic discussions. Trump indicated last month that the US was open to negotiations “when Tehran is prepared,” expressing a desire for a “hand of friendship and cooperation.” Additionally, Araghchi’s associate reiterated Iran’s ongoing interest in a peaceful nuclear agreement with the US.
Nevertheless, tensions are elevated, with Iran insisting that the UN must respond to what it considers an “unlawful act of war” perpetrated by the US and Israel. This situation highlights the persistent instability in the region as diplomatic efforts are tentatively approached.
