Dubbed Familiar, this four-legged robotic creature mimics the presence of a pet. Its dimensions are akin to a bulldog, featuring soft, touch-responsive fur and expressive eyes, along with animal-like movements. It stretches, responds to touch, and follows its owner, providing a vibrant, interactive experience.
What sets Familiar apart from its predecessors is its sophisticated artificial intelligence. The robot can hear voices, comprehend commands, and progressively learn daily habits. As interactions increase, it fine-tunes its behavior, tailoring its presence to the owner’s needs.
Angle highlighted that the design consciously avoids mimicking real pets or humans to manage user expectations. The objective is to form a genuine emotional bond, encapsulated within a unique robot that emits soft, animal-like sounds, yet remains non-verbal.
This advancement is rooted in extensive robotics research, but its viability is only now achievable thanks to breakthroughs in generative AI. Angle noted that such technology was out of reach just months prior.
While robotic pets are not a novel concept—for instance, Sony's Aibo made waves years ago—Familiar seeks to deepen emotional engagement and responsiveness.
The initiative is a brainchild of Angle’s startup, Familiar Machines & Magic, launched post his tenure at iRobot in 2024. The prototype recently garnered attention at a significant tech expo in New York.
