Johannesburg, South Africa – During the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi articulated India's ambitions for several transformative initiatives aimed at addressing critical global issues, ranging from drug trafficking to health challenges and skill enhancement in Africa.
At the plenary session focused on inclusive and sustainable growth, Modi emphasized the urgent need to confront the rising tide of drug-centric terrorism. “To combat the drug trade, particularly concerning substances like fentanyl, India proposes a G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug–Terror Nexus. We must dismantle the sinister economy that links drugs and terror,” he stated. This initiative seeks to intertwine financial, governance, and security strategies to break down the networks that connect these two societal scourges.
On the global health front, Modi suggested forming a G20 Global Healthcare Response Team. This initiative would gather qualified medical professionals from G20 countries for swift action during crises such as health emergencies or natural disasters. “Unity is our strength in the face of health challenges and catastrophic events,” Modi remarked, emphasizing the value of international collaboration.
He underscored the significance of African development in achieving global advancement. The proposed G20-Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative aims to equip one million certified trainers across the continent over the next decade. “India has been a steadfast ally of Africa. As the African Union becomes a permanent member of G20 under India’s presidency, we must commit to fostering skills in Africa,” Modi added.
Moreover, Modi revealed plans for a G20 Global Traditional Knowledge Repository, designed to collect and disseminate traditional wisdom from G20 nations, encouraging health and wellbeing on a global scale. “With India's rich heritage, this repository will serve to share our collective wisdom,” he noted.
These initiatives underscore India's strategic commitment to tackling major global challenges while bolstering international collaborations. The focus on drugs, health, and skill-building exemplifies a combination of immediate actions and forward-thinking, showcasing India's proactive stance in shaping G20 agendas.
