Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is encountering significant challenges to its T20 World Cup arrangements following a formal plea from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to relocate Bangladesh’s matches from India due to concerns over player safety.
This request surfaces at a precarious time, with the tournament kicking off on February 7, just weeks away. Bangladesh has suggested hosting its matches in Sri Lanka, a proposal that could compel the ICC to make rapid adjustments to venue selections, travel logistics, and match timings.
An escalation in tensions arose after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) terminated the IPL contract of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. This incident has led to a cooling of relations between the two cricket boards, mirroring more extensive diplomatic strains between India and Bangladesh.
On Sunday, the BCB announced its official approach to the ICC, voicing apprehensions regarding the current environment in India and its impact on player security. Reports indicate that the ICC is now assessing alternative scheduling possibilities, although this task is proving to be quite intricate.
Initially, Bangladesh was set to commence its World Cup journey against the West Indies in Kolkata on February 7, followed by fixtures against Italy and England, concluding the group stage against Nepal in Mumbai. While managers navigate these off-field uncertainties, Bangladesh’s preparation for the tournament continues unabated. The BCB has unveiled a 15-member squad, with Litton Kumar Das as the captain, indicating the team's focus remains sharp despite the surrounding controversy.
