On December 31, Khokon Das, a 50-year-old Hindu man, was brutally attacked and set ablaze in the Shariatpur district of Bangladesh. The horrifying incident unfolded as he was making his way home, when a group armed with sharp weapons overwhelmed him, culminating in his being set on fire. This alarming event underscores a troubling trend of assaults against Hindu minorities in the nation.
This incident is the fourth assault against Hindus in a short span. On December 24, in the Hossaindanga locality of Kalimohar Union, a mob took the life of 29-year-old Amrit Mondal. Previously, on December 18, 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das faced a tragic end in Bhaluka Upazila, Mymensingh, after being falsely accused of blasphemy by a Muslim colleague, leading to horrific mob violence that concluded with his body being hung and burned.
These unsettling occurrences are raising red flags regarding the safety of religious minorities within Bangladesh. The environment for Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and others has deteriorated significantly, particularly under the current interim government led by Yunus. Human rights organizations across the globe have vocally condemned these acts of violence.
India has voiced its grave concerns regarding the ongoing hostility faced by minorities in Bangladesh and is vigilantly observing developments to maintain peace and security in the region. The surging violence has provoked local and international outrage, emphasizing the urgent necessity for protective measures for our most vulnerable communities.
