ADU Unveils HearMe: Innovative AI for Translating Sign Language

Post by : Bianca Hayes

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has officially patented HearMe, a groundbreaking AI-driven application that translates multilingual sign language, aimed at improving communication for the hearing impaired globally.

Created by Dr. Modafar Ati, an Associate Professor in Computer Science and Information Technology at ADU, alongside alumna Reem Al Bostami, a graduate from the BSc in Information Technology, HearMe aligns with the UAE's National Policy for Empowering People of Determination, fostering equity, digital literacy, and accessibility.

The platform allows real-time bidirectional translation between sign language and text, translating gestures into written format while also rendering typed text into animated sign language. HearMe accommodates various sign languages, including American and French Sign Language, facilitating cross-cultural exchanges and alleviating both accessibility and language challenges.

“Technology and AI should yield practical solutions that make a social impact,” stated Dr. Modafar Ati. “HearMe enhances the involvement of individuals with hearing impairments in academic and career settings, exemplifying ADU’s dedication to inclusion, access, and sustainable growth.”

This application is tailor-made to endorse inclusive education and career avenues, empowering individuals with hearing impairments to engage fully in higher education and professional environments.

ADU remains committed to promoting accessibility through initiatives such as HearMe and the Inclusion Advocates of Tomorrow program, established in collaboration with the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an, Zayed Authority for People of Determination, and Key2enable. These ventures embody ADU's Vision 2027, which integrates inclusion, innovation, and community impact into its academic and research framework.
