His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, has inaugurated the Season of Wulfa, a vibrant cultural initiative dedicated to honoring Emirati traditions and community values.

This initiative aims to showcase the rich heritage of Dubai, fortifying social connections and reaffirming the emirate’s role as a global hub for tolerance and coexistence. Under the guidance of Sheikh Hamdan, the Season of Wulfa will be spearheaded by Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture, including a plethora of cultural and social events throughout the season.

A Celebration of Traditions and Spiritual Values

In the UAE, heritage intertwines with spiritual values, community ties, and hospitality. The Season of Wulfa will span from Hag Al Leila on the 15th of Sha‘ban, through Ramadan, and continuing into Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha.

These occasions are pivotal moments in the cultural landscape of the UAE, uniting cherished traditions under a single narrative that has defined Emirati society across generations.

The initiative is anchored in three essential pillars: reflection, connection, and blessing. Each pillar is expressed through customs and practices rich with social and spiritual significance, cultivating harmony, enhancing relationships, and promoting community unity.

Fostering Cultural Identity and Belonging

Emphasizing the preservation of time-honored traditions and their modern applications, the initiative aims to enlighten the public on the importance of cultural heritage, fostering belonging among diverse community segments, and promoting programs centered on culture’s role in nurturing a compassionate society.

A Citywide Celebration with Collaborative Spirit

Expected to feature over 50 events across more than 30 venues in Dubai—ranging from neighborhoods to cultural hubs—the Season of Wulfa will be a collaborative effort involving governmental bodies, private sectors, and local communities.

These collective actions aim to create a lively cultural and humanitarian platform that invites citizens, residents, and global visitors, fostering cultural exchange and shared human values alongside enduring traditions.

Sheikh Hamdan: Cultivating Closeness through Values

Sheikh Hamdan emphasized the significance of nurturing innovative initiatives that draw people closer to their values, identities, and communities.

“This initiative recognizes the essence of community spirit while cherishing our cultural heritage,” he remarked. “It enhances feelings of belonging and unity, forges cultural bridges, and strengthens the very fabric of society. Our ambition is to unite individuals and foster deeper connections.”

He underscored that a community's strength lies in its ability to sustain its living memory and pass down its values to future generations in ways that resonate today. The Season of Wulfa, he observed, merges past traditions with present experiences, creating a space for meaningful engagement and heightened awareness in safeguarding cultural identity.

Sheikha Latifa: Celebrating Shared Human Values

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed highlighted that the Season of Wulfa coincides with events—Hag Al Leila, Ramadan, and the two Eids—that embody humanitarian principles fostering goodwill and harmony.

She shared that the season prioritizes forming connections and crafting memorable moments that embody the true essence of Emirati culture, merging rich traditions with contemporary creativity through engaging experiences.

“Dubai continually prioritizes its cultural and social heritage,” she stated. “This heritage mirrors our shared history and lays the groundwork for future developments. Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai serves as a beacon of cultural harmony, welcoming nearly 200 nationalities who contribute to the emirate’s narrative.”

She also expressed that the Season of Wulfa enhances Dubai’s status as an international model for coexistence, tolerance, and peace. Through its foundational pillars—reflection, connection, and blessing—the initiative encapsulates the essence of human values and authentic traditions.

Empowering Current and Future Generations

This season aspires to provide platforms for creatives and visionaries to share their insights via celebrations that carry a universal message of tolerance. The program promises innovative, multi-sensory cultural experiences that interlace heritage, spiritual values, community bonds, and modern lifestyles anchored in local customs and hospitality.

These experiences embody the core meaning of Wulfa—familiarity, togetherness, and community—amplifying social ties while presenting Emirati heritage to future generations engagingly and meaningfully.

Understanding the Meaning of ‘Wulfa’

The term Wulfa derives from the classical Arabic word ‘Ulfa’, signifying familiarity and affection. In the UAE and parts of the Arab world, Wulfa describes closeness, comfort, and warm connections among people, perfectly aligning with the spirit and aims of this season-long initiative.

With the launch of the Season of Wulfa, Dubai expands its cultural landscape, honoring its heritage while fostering connections among individuals, communities, and diverse cultures.
