Thailand has announced impressive growth in its Geographical Indication (GI) products, particularly in the areas of pottery, woven crafts, and natural materials. The total market value is projected to exceed 440 million baht, underlining their significance in the national economy.
A recent survey covering 27 GI-registered products across 39 provinces indicates that these items not only help preserve traditional craftsmanship but also offer tangible income opportunities for local communities. This growth demonstrates a rising demand for authentic, locally made goods.
Leading the charge, Phatthalung sedge has emerged as a top performer, contributing approximately 150 million baht in value. Its average price has notably surged, now standing at around 300 baht per piece, showcasing the enhanced market appeal resulting from GI certification.
Additional significant contributors include Kanchanaburi black spinel, accounting for over 90 million baht, and Isaan traditional silk, which has surpassed 43 million baht in value. These products have also experienced price hikes, reflecting growing demand and improved branding efforts.
Lopburi kaolin and Pran Kratai marble are also showing strong market performance. Used in both construction and handicrafts, these materials have seen steady price increases following their GI recognition. Their wide price range demonstrates versatility across various industries.
Officials state that GI certification has been instrumental in enhancing product quality, increasing value, and creating stronger identities for local offerings. This development aids producers in competing in both domestic and international arenas.
The Thai government has integrated the promotion of GI products into its economic strategy, viewing these goods as a vital means to bolster small enterprises and ensure sustainable income for rural regions.
Experts predict that ongoing support and promotion efforts will continue to grow the GI market. As awareness and demand escalate, these traditional items are set to play a more prominent role in Thailand's economic landscape in the near future.
