In a strong message, President Trump has cautioned Iran that "time is running out" for negotiations regarding its nuclear program, coinciding with a significant increase in the presence of US military forces in the Gulf.
He referred to a "massive armada" that includes a powerful naval fleet spearheaded by the USS Abraham Lincoln, ready for swift action if required.
In retaliation, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi assured that their military stands prepared “with fingers on the trigger” to react decisively against any threats by land or sea. Iran maintains its nuclear ambitions are peaceful, disputing US claims of seeking nuclear arms.
The backdrop of Trump’s warning includes a severe crackdown on recent protests in Iran, which erupted following a dramatic drop in the national currency and escalated into broader discontent against the regime. Trump offered assurances of US support, stating “Help is on the way,” although he noted that the executions of protestors had reportedly ceased.
Human rights organizations estimate that thousands have died since the protests started, with some estimates rising above 25,000.
Highlighting Iran's nuclear ambitions, Trump pressed for a return to the negotiation table, demanding "NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS" while cautioning that any future US strikes on Iranian sites would be "far worse" than before.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed the Senate that the Iranian government is at its weakest, facing economic turmoil while unable to satisfy protestor demands. He emphasized that US forces are positioned to counter any Iranian threats in the area.
Iranian officials reiterated their willingness to engage in a fair nuclear deal devoid of coercion while standing firm on their rights to peaceful nuclear development, denying intentions to pursue nuclear weapons.
Recent satellite imagery and open-source intelligence indicate a bolstered US military footprint in the Middle East, with fighter jets arriving in Jordan, new air missile systems set up in Qatar, as well as numerous naval units in Bahrain. US drones and reconnaissance aircraft are conducting operations near Iranian territory.
Iran, on its part, has deployed its drone carrier ship, IRIS Shahid Bagheri, near its shoreline, demonstrating readiness for a response.
Since the US exited the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018, Iran has breached uranium enrichment boundaries, intensifying the standoff. The last US action aimed at Iranian nuclear sites occurred last June, reportedly hampering Iran’s nuclear ambitions, although Tehran contended the impact was minimal.
In retaliation for the US operation, Iran targeted a US base in Qatar with missiles—a move Trump dismissed as "very weak" and anticipated.
As both sides engage in military and diplomatic posturing, global attention remains fixed on whether Iran will recommit to negotiations or encounter increased pressure.
