Remarkable Medical Triumph: Abu Dhabi's Separation of Nigerian Twins

In a groundbreaking achievement, Abu Dhabi has successfully completed the separation of 15-month-old Nigerian conjoined twins, a feat in one of the utmost complex pediatric operations globally. The procedure took place at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), part of PureHealth's SEHA network, reinforcing the UAE's status as a leader in innovative healthcare solutions.

The twins, named Mercy and Goodness, faced a unique challenge at birth. They were connected at the head, sharing critical brain structures, which defines their rare condition known as craniopagus twinning.

This medical journey spanned over six months and involved four intricate surgeries. A multidisciplinary team of over 60 specialists from the UAE, UK, Brazil, and Nigeria collaborated closely, including experts in neurosurgery, craniofacial surgery, and rehabilitation.

Advanced medical technologies played a pivotal role in the surgeries, featuring state-of-the-art imaging, augmented reality simulations, AI-assisted surgical planning, and 3D printing efforts. These innovations enabled the surgical team to intricately navigate the twins' anatomical complexities.

Gemini Untwined, an international charity focused on craniopagus conditions, was instrumental in managing surgical expertise and planning.

Post-surgery, skilled surgeons reconstructed the girls' skulls with custom 3D-printed titanium implants. They are currently in recovery and rehabilitation in the UAE, gradually learning to move independently before their anticipated return to Nigeria.

UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem Al Hashimy, hailed this achievement as a testament to compassion, innovation, and global collaboration. She emphasized that the surgery exemplifies Abu Dhabi’s ongoing commitment to transformative healthcare through cutting-edge technology.

Mansoor Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Chairman of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, noted that this operation showcases the emirate’s remarkable healthcare infrastructure and its position as a prime destination for specialized medical services.

Farhan Malik, the Founder and Managing Director of PureHealth Group, highlighted that this successful separation embodies their mission of patient-centered care while applauding the dedicated efforts of the entire medical team.

Professor Noor Ul Owase Jeelani led the surgical team, describing the procedure as an extraordinary milestone achieved through global cooperation, technological advancement, and the unwavering spirit of the twins and their family.

Innovative surgical techniques were employed, enhanced by support from the Zayed Centre for Research at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The use of mixed reality and AI tools notably improved surgical precision and safety, culminating in what is believed to be the quickest separation of vertically conjoined twins on record.

The successful surgery of Mercy and Goodness marks a significant event for Abu Dhabi and underpins the UAE's emerging role as a beacon of advanced healthcare and humanitarian efforts on the global stage.
