Malaysia’s top men’s doubles team, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, faced a challenging quarter-final battle at the Singapore Open, ending their run after a closely contested match against Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri on Friday. This defeat comes after a remarkable week for the Malaysian pair, who have consistently performed well on the BWF World Tour recently.

Competing at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, the world No. 8 pair fought hard throughout the intense three-set match. They initially dropped the first game 21-18, but quickly bounced back to seize the second game 21-10, pushing the match to a deciding third set. Unfortunately, the Indonesians regained their footing, clinching the final game 21-14 to advance to the semi-finals.

With this victory, Fajar and Shohibul improved their record against the Malaysians to 2-1, following a previous win over Goh and Izzuddin at last year’s China Masters. This victory adds to a significant season for the Indonesian pair.

Despite the disappointment of not reaching the semi-finals, Goh and Izzuddin exhibited their determination and fighting spirit. Their performances throughout the tournament showcased their growing confidence in facing some of the world’s top doubles teams.

This latest effort at the Singapore Open is one of many challenges for Goh and Izzuddin. Prior to Singapore, they reached the semi-finals at the Thailand Open and then progressed to the finals of the Malaysia Masters. Their recent results solidify their status among the elite in the sport.

Having played 12 matches in just 17 days, the Malaysian duo faced significant physical demands, with fatigue evident during key moments of the deciding game against their higher-ranked opponents.

Though their Singapore Open journey has come to a close, the impressive performances provide a solid foundation for the Malaysian camp, highlighting their ambition to compete for major international titles in the near future.
