Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir is facing strong international criticism after videos showing detained Gaza flotilla activists in humiliating conditions were shared online. The incident has created diplomatic tension and sparked condemnation from several governments, international organisations, and human rights groups.
The controversy began after Israeli forces intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters. The flotilla reportedly included activists and humanitarian volunteers from multiple countries who said they were attempting to deliver aid and raise awareness about the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Israeli authorities stopped the vessels, saying the flotilla was trying to violate Israel’s naval blockade around Gaza.
After the interception, Ben-Gvir released videos showing detained activists kneeling with their hands tied behind their backs while Israeli officials mocked them. The footage quickly spread across social media and triggered outrage in many countries. Critics said the treatment shown in the videos was degrading and violated international humanitarian standards.
Several European leaders and international officials publicly criticised the incident. The European Commission described the treatment of the activists as “completely unacceptable” and called for all detainees to be treated with dignity and according to international law. European Council President Antonio Costa also expressed anger over the videos and demanded the immediate release of the activists.
The backlash was not limited to foreign governments. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly criticised Ben-Gvir for releasing the videos and said the minister’s behaviour damaged Israel’s international image. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also distanced himself from the incident and warned that such actions harm diplomatic relations.
Human rights organisations claimed some activists suffered physical abuse, psychological pressure, and harsh detention conditions after being taken into custody. Reports also alleged that some detainees faced injuries and intimidation during the operation. Israel has denied many of the accusations and said its forces acted within legal and security limits while protecting national interests.
The flotilla incident has once again drawn global attention to the ongoing conflict surrounding Gaza and the long-standing Israeli blockade. Supporters of the flotilla argue that humanitarian aid is urgently needed in Gaza, while Israeli authorities maintain that such missions can be linked to political provocation and security risks.
Political analysts say the controversy could further increase pressure on Israel at a time when international concern over Gaza is already growing. The release of the videos and the strong global response have also intensified debates about the conduct of Israeli officials and the treatment of international activists during security operations.
