Protests erupted worldwide Thursday after Israel intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. The flotilla included 41 ships with more than 400 people aboard, including politicians, climate activist Greta Thunberg, former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, and Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela. Israeli authorities halted the vessels on Wednesday, citing security concerns, and have threatened deportation for foreign activists.
Mass Demonstrations Across Cities
In Barcelona, around 15,000 people marched in protest, chanting slogans such as “Gaza, you are not alone” and “Boycott Israel.” Riot police used truncheons to push back some demonstrators attempting to climb barriers.
Hundreds also gathered outside the Irish parliament in Dublin, where the Palestinian cause is often compared to Ireland’s historical struggle against colonial rule. “I am worried for my daughter, but proud of what she is doing,” said Miriam McNally, whose daughter is aboard the flotilla.
European and Global Solidarity
Protests were reported in Paris, Marseille, Berlin, The Hague, Brussels, Geneva, Athens, Tunis, Brasilia, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, and Kuala Lumpur. In Marseille, about 100 protesters were arrested while attempting to block the offices of a weapons manufacturer accused of supplying Israel. In Turkey, demonstrators marched to the Israeli embassy demanding the release of flotilla members and a halt to academic and economic ties with Israel.
In Italy, major unions called a general strike in solidarity with the flotilla. Rome saw 10,000 protesters marching near the Colosseum, while Milan, Torino, Florence, and Bologna also held demonstrations criticizing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for supporting Israel.
Activists Condemn Israel’s Actions
Protesters described Israel’s interception as “barbaric” and the country as an “apartheid state.” Demonstrations included lighting bonfires, setting off fireworks, and displaying banners urging the European Union to halt financial aid to Israel.
The Global Sumud Flotilla remains blocked by Israeli authorities. Legal and diplomatic efforts are ongoing to allow the aid to reach Gaza and to secure the release of activists.
