Dubai's own low-cost airline, flydubai, is making a significant advance into long-distance travel by ordering 60 GEnx-1B engines from GE Aerospace. These engines are destined to power flydubai’s inaugural fleet of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, showcasing a strategic evolution beyond its traditional 737 service.
The announcement, made at the 2025 Dubai Airshow, also includes provisions for spare engines alongside a comprehensive long-term service agreement to guarantee reliability as the airline gears up to extend its services to new global hubs. Since launching in 2008, flydubai has successfully expanded to over 135 destinations spanning 57 countries, marking a significant moment in its journey toward long-haul service.
Renowned for fuel efficiency and increased passenger comfort, the Boeing 787-9 will support flydubai's efforts to meet the growing demand while diversifying its flight options. The GEnx-1B engines, celebrated for their resilience and effective performance under tough conditions, have logged over 62 million flight hours globally, powering around two-thirds of all active 787s.
This synergy of aircraft and engines allows flydubai to enhance fuel efficiency while ensuring reliability—key components for the airline's sustained growth in both regional and long-range routes. This investment reflects flydubai’s ongoing commitment to innovation and expansion in line with shifting passenger demands.
With the first Boeing 787s anticipated in the near future, flydubai is poised to transform its long-haul operations, providing passengers with improved connectivity and travel experiences via Dubai's prime aviation hub.
