FIA Confirms Significant 2026 F1 Regulation Changes Following Safety Review

Post by : Bianca Hayes

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has announced that essential regulatory revisions for the 2026 season have been ratified by Formula 1 stakeholders.

This decision was reached in an online conference with FIA officials, team principals, power unit manufacturers' CEOs, and Formula One Management (FOM). The discussions emphasized enhancing safety, performance consistency, and the overall quality of racing.

The proposed changes involve adjustments to qualifying energy management systems, racetrack safety protocols, power control regulations, and improved strategies for driving in wet conditions. These initiatives are designed to bolster safety and competitiveness in the sport.

A key modification includes increasing the number of races eligible for lower energy limits, from 8 to 12 events, allowing for better adaptation to varying circuit conditions.

The FIA has also put forth measures to mitigate excessive speed disparities among cars while ensuring overtaking remains viable and performance benchmarks are upheld.

For enhanced visibility during adverse weather, the rear light systems have been simplified, which will assist drivers in reacting faster and improving safety during wet races.

Further tests on race start systems will take place during the Miami Grand Prix weekend prior to receiving final approval.

The finalized proposals will undergo an electronic vote by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. If they receive approval, most changes will come into effect ahead of the Miami Grand Prix on May 3.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem commended all parties involved—including FIA personnel, teams, drivers, and manufacturers—for their collaboration and swift decision-making.

He reaffirmed that the FIA’s primary focus is on safety and equitable competition, with changes reflecting data gathered from recent races.

The FIA Region I Spring Meeting in Budva, Montenegro, where these discussions were held, also addressed broader topics concerning safe and sustainable mobility among 102 FIA member clubs.
