A federal judge in the United States has ruled against a lawsuit from the Trump administration that aimed to invalidate a New York state law related to immigration and driver’s licenses. This decision is a significant defeat for former President Trump as he seeks to contest legislation in Democratic-run states that restrict federal immigration cooperation.
The ruling, handed down on Tuesday by US District Judge Anne Nardacci in Albany, New York, concluded that the US Department of Justice did not provide sufficient evidence showing that the New York law infringed upon the US Constitution. Therefore, the law will continue to be implemented.
This contentious law, known as the Driver’s License Access and Privacy Act or “Green Light Law,” was enacted in New York in 2019. It permits individuals residing in the U.S. without legal immigration status to obtain standard driver’s licenses. The legislation also governs the circumstances under which the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles can share personal data with federal immigration authorities.
The Trump administration contended that this law hindered federal agencies from enforcing immigration regulations. Officials alleged that New York obstructed access to critical information needed to combat illegal immigration. The Justice Department sought a court injunction to prevent enforcement of the law.
Judge Nardacci dismissed these claims, noting that the federal government was unable to cite any law mandating New York to provide driver’s license information to immigration authorities. She determined that the administration failed to prove how the state’s law conflicted with federal jurisdiction or breached the Constitution.
New York Attorney General Letitia James praised the verdict, labeling the lawsuit as unfounded and asserting that the state’s laws aim to safeguard the rights and welfare of all New Yorkers. Governor Kathy Hochul, along with other state officials, was also included in the lawsuit.
This lawsuit was initiated earlier this year by US Attorney General Pam Bondi, as part of a broader legal initiative by the Trump administration against “sanctuary” policies established in Democratic regions and municipalities. These policies typically minimize collaboration with federal immigration enforcement in areas like data sharing and local law enforcement.
Proponents of the Green Light Law advocate that it enhances road safety by ensuring a greater number of drivers are licensed and insured. They also claim it enables migrants to live and work more securely without the anxiety of routine interactions with state agencies leading to deportation.
With this ruling, New York’s law continues to stand, and the Trump administration’s federal challenge has been quashed. This decision underscores the ongoing legal and political discussions in the United States regarding immigration, state sovereignty, and federal power limits.
