Vienna:
On Saturday, Austria saw three devastating avalanches resulting in eight fatalities among skiers, as officials warned of heightened avalanche risks across the country.
The first incident involved a female skier who was unfortunately buried under an avalanche in the Bad Hofgastein region, occurring around 12:30 p.m. at an elevation of approximately 2,200 meters, as reported by the Pongau mountain rescue service.
Shortly thereafter, another avalanche descended in Gastein Valley, south of Salzburg, catching seven skiers. This tragic event led to the deaths of four individuals, with two others sustaining serious injuries, while a sixth person escaped without harm.
In the late afternoon, at nearly 4:30 p.m., a third avalanche impacted near Pusterwald in central Austria. Authorities stated that three Czech nationals perished in this incident, while the remaining four in their group were rescued safely.
Gerhard Kremser, head of the Pongau mountain rescue service, indicated that these tragic occurrences serve as a somber reminder of the existing dangers. He emphasized the serious avalanche warnings previously issued, urging the public to heed these cautions.
