In the early hours of Saturday, approximately 2 a.m. local time, inhabitants of Caracas, Venezuela's capital, reported a series of at least seven explosions accompanied by the sound of low-flying aircraft. The cause of these disturbances is currently unclear, with both Venezuelan and U.S. officials silent on the matter.
In the aftermath, anxious residents hurried outdoors, seeking refuge from the unexpected chaos. This unsettling occurrence coincides with rising tensions between Venezuela and the U.S., particularly regarding U.S. military efforts targeting vessels alleged to be involved in drug trafficking.
On the previous day, government representatives from Venezuela expressed a willingness to enter talks with the U.S. aimed at fighting drug smuggling. Nonetheless, President Nicolás Maduro accused the United States of attempting to destabilize his government to seize control of Venezuela’s vast oil resources, referring to the sustained pressure initiated by a significant U.S. military presence in the Caribbean since August.
Maduro currently faces narco-terrorism charges leveled by the U.S. Recently, a drone attack, presumed to be conducted by U.S. intelligence, targeted a dock allegedly utilized by Venezuelan drug syndicates, marking the first known U.S. strike within Venezuelan territory since operations against suspected drug-trafficking vessels began in September.
The U.S. has also enforced sanctions leading to the seizure of oil tankers and instituted blockades to bolster economic pressure on Venezuela. Since the beginning of September, U.S. forces have executed over 35 strikes against ships in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific, reportedly causing more than 115 fatalities, according to U.S. governmental sources.
These military actions followed a significant increase in U.S. troop deployments near South America, including the arrival of the U.S. Navy's most sophisticated aircraft carrier in November, pushing troop levels in the region to unprecedented heights.
U.S. officials advocate that these actions are imperative for curbing drug trafficking into America, framing their operations as a necessary "armed conflict" with drug cartels.
Simultaneously, footage of the Caracas explosions was broadcast by Iranian state media, highlighting the close relationship between Iran and Venezuela, fueled by their mutual resistance to U.S. policy in the area.
