European Union Mobilizes for Hantavirus Incident on Cruise Ship

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In response to a Hantavirus outbreak associated with the MV Hondius cruise ship, the European Commission is spearheading efforts to assist European national authorities.

The Commission revealed that the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has determined that the risk level to the European public is “very low.” They confirmed that effective infection prevention protocols are being adhered to and noted that Hantaviruses are not easily transmissible between individuals.

The initiative to manage the outbreak was activated by Spain through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism on May 6. Since then, the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre has played a pivotal role in safely evacuating passengers from the MV Hondius, which was stationed near Tenerife Island.

On May 10, five repatriation flights organized by various EU nations—including France, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece, and Ireland—successfully departed. A final sixth repatriation flight is currently being conducted by the Netherlands.

To enhance the response measures, the European Union has utilized resources from its strategic reserve, which included dispatching a medical evacuation aircraft from Norway’s EU fleet. Additional transport logistics and protective equipment are on standby for further needs.

A liaison officer from the EU Emergency Response Coordination Centre has been dispatched to Tenerife for on-the-ground support. Furthermore, two experts from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control were sent aboard the cruise ship prior to the disembarkation of passengers.

The Commission emphasized ongoing coordination of a joint health response involving Spain, other EU member nations, world health authorities including WHO, and G7 allies.

To ensure an efficient operation, the Health Security Committee led by the European Commission is collaborating with national health organizations to oversee passenger screenings and medical follow-up procedures.

Daily meetings are being conducted through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and the Health Security Committee to assess the situation, exchange information, and refine operational strategies as necessary.

The European Commission reiterated its primary focus on safeguarding public health, assisting affected individuals, and enabling member states to respond swiftly and effectively using the most current medical insights.
