Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture, officially opened the exhibition ‘PROXIMITIES’ in Seoul, South Korea, celebrating contemporary art from the UAE. Organized collaboratively by the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) and the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), this marks the debut of Emirati art in South Korea and East Asia. The exhibition is set to continue until 29th March 2026 and aims to foster a long-lasting cultural partnership that encourages artistic exchanges between both nations.

A number of distinguished attendees were present at the inauguration, including South Korean First Lady Kim Hea Kyung; Chae Hwi-young, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, who founded ADMAF; Abdulla Saif Ali Slayem AlNuaimi, UAE Ambassador to South Korea; Choi Eun-ju, Director-General of SeMA; and Kim Tae-kyun, First Deputy Mayor of Seoul. The attendance of these notable figures underscores the significance of cultural collaboration between the UAE and South Korea.

Positioned as the largest showcase of contemporary Emirati art in South Korea, the exhibition features around 110 pieces by 47 artists from various backgrounds and generations. The displayed works chart the evolution of Emirati art since the 1980s, highlighting how artists have explored diverse themes throughout the years.

Included in the exhibition are works from pioneering, contemporary, and emerging Emirati artists. Their creations resonate with both local and universal human themes—covering identity, memory, time, the body, nature, and social dynamics. Visitors are invited to experience the rich variety of artistic practices that have contributed to the UAE’s vibrant visual arts landscape.

The ‘PROXIMITIES’ exhibition continues a series of collaborative ventures started in 2024 between SeMA and ADMAF, aiming to develop a robust framework for international cultural cooperation. The exhibition promotes Emirati art on a global scale, fostering dialogues among artists, curators, and audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Beyond showcasing the UAE’s dynamic art scene, this exhibition plays a vital role in strengthening cultural understanding and exchange between the UAE and South Korea, offering a unique opportunity for audiences to delve into the depths of contemporary Emirati creativity.
