Dubai's RTA Unveils Hessa Street Project, Travel Time Slashed to 4 Minutes

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has officially inaugurated the Hessa Street Development Project, spanning 4.5 kilometers between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. This initiative seeks to enhance traffic circulation and significantly lessen travel durations in one of the city’s busiest zones.

Notable expansions have occurred with Hessa Street, which has been enlarged from two lanes to four lanes in each direction, complemented by critical enhancements at four major intersections: Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. This upgrade has effectively doubled the street's capacity from 8,000 to 16,000 vehicles hourly in both directions.

As a direct result, the travel duration along this corridor has drastically decreased from 15 minutes to just 4 minutes, facilitating smoother daily commutes for residents.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA, indicated that this project aligns with Dubai’s overarching vision to boost infrastructure, enhance mobility, and accommodate rapid urban expansion. He underscored that Hessa Street serves vital residential neighborhoods such as Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha, and Jumeirah Village Circle, with a projected population growth surpassing 640,000 by 2030.

Significant Project Upgrades Include:

  • Construction of a two-lane elevated ramp over the Dubai Metro Red Line, ensuring seamless access from Sheikh Zayed Road to Hessa Street.

  • Widening the bridge at First Al Khail Street to four lanes in both directions.

  • Establishing a new parallel bridge at Al Asayel Street to enhance capacity.

  • Building directional ramps and additional bridges at Al Khail Road for improved connectivity towards Sharjah and Deira.

Furthermore, RTA has initiated Phase 2 of this project, which will extend Hessa Street from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road over a distance of 3 kilometers. This phase will introduce 8,835 meters of bridges and a 480-meter tunnel.

Phase 2 is expected to further increase road capacity from 4,000 to 8,000 vehicles per hour and cut travel time down from 24 minutes to just 5 minutes. It aims to enhance connectivity for several major communities including Jumeirah Village Circle, Arjan, Dubai Science Park, Al Barsha South, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, and Emirates Hills.

Ultimately, the project is poised to benefit around 650,000 residents, handling nearly half a million trips each day — a significant advancement for Dubai’s transport infrastructure.
