Post by : Sean Carter

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) recently held its 119th auction for special vehicle number plates, attracting keen buyers and raising nearly AED 97.95 million in total. The auction was marked by high competition and a strong interest in distinctive and easy-to-remember number plates.

BB 88 Becomes the Top Plate

The star of the auction was the “super” plate BB 88, which sold for an impressive AED 14 million. This makes it the most expensive plate in the event. Following BB 88, the plate Y 31 fetched AED 6.27 million, and M 78 was sold for AED 6 million. Another popular plate, BB 777, also reached AED 6 million.

These special plates are highly sought after in Dubai because they are considered symbols of prestige, status, and exclusivity. Number plates with repeating digits, simple combinations, or unique letters often attract wealthy collectors and car enthusiasts.

Range of Plates on Sale

Around 90 number plates were available at the auction. These included two-, three-, four-, and five-digit plates with a variety of letter combinations, such as AA, BB, K, L, M, N, P, Q, T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z. The wide range of options ensures that buyers can choose plates that reflect their personal style or business identity.

How to Participate

To join an RTA number plate auction, participants must meet a few requirements. First, they need a traffic file in Dubai. A security deposit of AED 25,000 must be issued as a cheque to the RTA. Additionally, there is a non-refundable fee of AED 120, payable at customer happiness centers. For convenience, payments can also be made by credit card through the RTA website or app.

Popularity and Cultural Significance

Dubai’s number plate auctions have become highly popular over the years. Many residents see these plates not only as a status symbol but also as an investment. Plates with simple numbers, repeating digits, or special letter combinations often increase in value over time. This trend reflects Dubai’s culture of luxury, exclusivity, and attention to detail in lifestyle choices.

Auctions like these also highlight Dubai’s innovative approach to public services, combining transparency, convenience, and opportunities for citizens and residents to participate in unique ways. The large sums spent on plates like BB 88 show how much people value distinctiveness in a fast-growing city where style and prestige matter.

Final Notes

The RTA continues to run number plate auctions regularly, offering an exciting mix of plates for all budgets. As interest in these auctions grows, future events are expected to attract even higher bids for rare and unique plates.
