Dubai Unveils Public Robotaxi Service via Uber App

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In a significant leap towards smart mobility, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched its pilot public Robotaxi service through the Uber app. This initiative, driven by autonomous driving expert WeRide, positions Dubai among the leading cities worldwide to provide self-driving vehicles via a popular ride-hailing service.

Currently, the service operates in two bustling coastal areas—Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah—famous for their high visitor footfall and densely populated neighborhoods. Riders can select the “Autonomous” option in the Uber platform to book their trips. Initially, each Robotaxi includes a safety operator onboard as the city transitions toward fully driverless services slated for 2026.

This pilot programme follows extensive testing that commenced after RTA and WeRide formed their partnership in April 2025. The initiative is tailored to seamlessly introduce autonomous vehicles into Dubai's extensive transport network, aligning with the emirate’s goal of making 25% of all journeys autonomous by 2030.

WeRide is already a prominent player in the region, operating approximately 150 autonomous vehicles throughout the Middle East, including more than 100 Robotaxis. The firm plans to enhance its operations significantly as the demand for advanced mobility solutions increases.

With Dubai's population surging beyond 4 million, the necessity for public and shared transport options continues to rise. In 2024, the city recorded over 153 million trips via public transport, taxis, and shared mobility, with a remarkable 28% growth in app-based ride-hailing services compared to the previous year, reinforcing the demand for innovative transport solutions.

The launch of Robotaxi services through Uber reflects Dubai's ambition to embrace autonomous technology on a broader scale. With robust public interest and major international investments in the sector, the emirate is positioning itself as a leader in next-generation mobility, setting the stage for more extensive autonomous operations in the future.
