Two 19-year-old men have been charged after a taxi driver was shot dead in North Battleford
In Ogun State, Nigeria, the driver of a car carrying British boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been charged with reckless and dangerous driving after a fatal accident.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the 46-year-old driver, was operating a Lexus SUV on Monday on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway, where the vehicle collided with a stationary truck. Joshua was accompanied by associates Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, both of whom tragically lost their lives in the incident.
The crash resulted in the immediate deaths of Ayodele and Ghami, while Joshua and Kayode thankfully sustained only minor injuries. They were both hospitalized but later discharged after treatment.
Kayode, having left the hospital on Thursday, was subsequently placed in police custody and charged with reckless and dangerous driving. He was granted bail set at five million naira, pending the fulfilment of certain conditions while remaining in custody.
Initial investigations indicated that the SUV was traveling at a high speed prior to the crash. Reports also highlighted that a tyre burst contributed to losing control and the subsequent collision with the parked truck.
After being discharged, Joshua visited a funeral home with his mother to honor his friends who've passed away. It is reported that arrangements for repatriating their remains to the UK are underway, with suggestions that this may have already been finalized.
This unfortunate event has sparked discussions about road safety issues on Nigeria's highways, with particular emphasis on the risks of speeding and the presence of stationary vehicles. As of now, Joshua's current location and any statements from his representatives remain undisclosed.
