Shooter's Disturbing Confession in Brown–MIT Case Uncovered by DOJ

The U.S. Department of Justice has unveiled shocking details about the man implicated in the murders of two Brown University students and an MIT professor, including videos where he confesses to the heinous crimes.

Identified as Claudio Neves Valente, 48, a former student at Brown and a national from Portugal, he was discovered deceased on December 18 in a New Hampshire storage unit, just days following a violent rampage that left a scar on academic circles across Massachusetts.

The chaos initiated on December 13, when Neves Valente fired shots inside an engineering building at Brown University, leading to the deaths of two students and injuring nine others. This incident prompted urgent campus lockdowns and extensive searches. Two days later, he fatally shot MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at his Brookline residence.

FBI agents, during investigations, found an electronic device in the storage unit where Neves Valente's body was located. The device contained several short videos where he confessed in Portuguese, taking full responsibility for the shootings.

In shared transcripts from the Justice Department, he admitted to having been planning the Brown University assault for an extended period, detailing his planning over at least six academic semesters. Although he did not clearly specify his motives for selecting Brown University or targeting Professor Loureiro, he noted that they both had studied in Portugal years ago.

The videos reflect a lack of empathy, with Neves Valente claiming he felt no obligation to apologize as he had never received a genuine apology in his life. He called the shooting execution “a little incompetent,” yet insisted that he accomplished something important.

Indicating a desire to control his fate, he stated he aimed to prevent further suffering and exhibited a cool detachment as he brushed off criticism of his violent actions.

The shooter described his history with the storage unit, mentioning he had rented it for approximately three years. He recalled an encounter at Brown University that later emerged as a significant lead in the investigation. A witness who crossed paths with him multiple times noted his conduct and later identified him from police photographs.

This eyewitness disseminated information on Reddit, linking a gray Nissan to the suspect, with other users encouraging him to alert the authorities, which he ultimately did. Prior to this, law enforcement had struggled to connect any vehicle with the shooter.

Neves Valente acknowledged in the videos that someone had seen his license plate and was astonished by the time it took for the police to track him down.

Originally arriving in the United States over 25 years ago for physics studies at Brown University, he discontinued his graduate program in 2001. He secured legal permanent residence in 2017 and resided in Miami prior to these tragic events.

In his recordings, Neves Valente expressed neutrality toward both the U.S. and Portugal, indicating a long-standing indifference about his whereabouts. These disturbing videos are now part of the federal investigation, providing an unsettling insight into the psyche of a man who meticulously orchestrated violence and left behind an unsettling narrative of the tragic events resulting in multiple lives lost.
