Denmark and Greenland have undertaken a vigorous diplomatic campaign in Washington aimed at deterring former U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed efforts to claim Greenland, a strategically vital Arctic territory.
Jesper Møller Sørensen, Denmark’s ambassador to the United States, along with Jacob Isbosethsen, Greenland’s chief representative in Washington, met with officials from the White House National Security Council on Thursday. Their discussions centered on Trump’s recent remarks suggesting the U.S. could acquire Greenland, ominously hinting at possible military action.
Danish officials confirmed the meeting took place but requested anonymity as they were not cleared to speak publicly on the matter. The White House has yet to provide any comments regarding the ongoing discussions.
In addition to their talks at the White House, the Danish and Greenland envoys have engaged in dialogue with several U.S. lawmakers this week. They aim to generate political pressure and persuade American leaders to oppose any takeover attempts concerning Greenland.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is slated to meet with Danish officials next week, where this issue is expected to be a key topic of discussion.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is crucially important due to its geographical position in the Arctic.
