A Texas resident, Jimmy Jack McDaniel, has been taken into custody following an incident where he drove a Tesla Cybertruck into Grapevine Lake to test its “Wade Mode” functionality.
The occurrence unfolded at Katie’s Woods Boat Ramp, drawing police attention after reports surfaced of a vehicle partially immersed in the lake. Upon arrival, officers discovered the Cybertruck stranded near the water's edge after it failed to make it back to dry land.
McDaniel informed law enforcement that he had purposely driven the Cybertruck into the water to evaluate its aquatic capabilities, specifically its Wade Mode feature.
This feature is designed to allow the Cybertruck to navigate through shallow water, mud, and challenging terrains by modifying the vehicle's systems and ride height. However, it's intended solely for specific depth conditions.
Authorities reported the vehicle became incapacitated while in the water, leading to it taking on water and prompting a swift emergency response. Firefighters from the Grapevine Fire Department were involved in retrieving the vehicle, which a wrecker eventually lifted from the lake.
Fortunately, no injuries were recorded during the incident.
McDaniel is now facing various charges, including operating a vehicle in a restricted park area, not having valid boat registration, and breaking water safety regulations.
This event serves as a caution regarding the potential dangers of incorrectly utilizing off-road vehicle features like Tesla's Wade Mode, which is designed for shallow water scenarios and careful operation.
