Sidney Crosby is closing in on a major milestone with the Pittsburgh Penguins, edging closer to surpassing Mario Lemieux for the most regular-season points in franchise history. Crosby currently trails Lemieux by just seven points and already holds the Penguins record for combined regular- and post-season points.
On Monday night, Crosby scored his 58th and 59th career goals against the Philadelphia Flyers, helping the Penguins to a 5-1 win. His dominance over Philadelphia is unmatched, with 59 goals and 137 points in 92 games — the most any opponent has ever recorded against the Flyers.
“I’m sure [Lemieux] knows me well enough to know that’s not something I really want to talk about it,” Crosby said of potentially breaking the record. “Just go out there and play. If it happens, it happens.”
At 38 years old, Crosby has accumulated 1,716 career points, closing in on Lemieux’s 1,723. He has led the Penguins to three Stanley Cup titles under Lemieux’s ownership in 2009, 2016, and 2017.
Crosby’s performance against the Flyers continues to be historic. He opened the scoring with his 60th career road game-opening goal and added a second goal on a power play wrist shot in the second period. The victory snapped Philadelphia’s three-game winning streak and helped Pittsburgh bounce back from a 7-2 loss to Toronto.
Despite a rocky start to the season, with the Penguins suffering seven losses in nine games in November, Crosby remains a central figure in Pittsburgh’s push in the Metropolitan Division. Tied with the Flyers at 31 points, the team looks to stay competitive, largely thanks to Crosby’s leadership and skill.
“It shows you what kind of exceptional player and person he is, to never be satisfied with anything,” said teammate Bryan Rust, who recorded a goal and two assists in the game. “It’s almost fuelling him more to get more and more.”
With the NHL goals lead also within reach, Crosby’s chase for records continues to excite fans and give the Penguins a signature edge in every matchup.
