In a heartbreaking turn of events, Cristian Camilo Munoz, the Colombian cyclist, has succumbed to complications from an injury sustained during the Tour du Jura in France. He was 30 years old.
During last Saturday's race, Munoz suffered a knee injury that required medical attention. After initial treatment, he returned to Spain with his team, but soon his health deteriorated due to a severe infection that proved challenging to manage.
Despite being admitted to a hospital as his condition worsened, medical teams were unable to save him, and he tragically passed away on Friday morning. This loss was confirmed by his team, NU Colombia Continental Team, in an official statement.
In light of this tragedy, NU Colombia has decided to withdraw from the upcoming Vuelta a Asturias.
David Lappartient, president of the International Cycling Union, shared heartfelt condolences, noting that the cycling community is united in grief and extends sympathy to Munoz's family, friends, and teammates.
Previously, Munoz competed with UAE Team Emirates from 2019 to 2021 and joined NU Colombia this year.
Throughout his career, he achieved several commendable results, including stage victories at the Clasica de Anapoima and the Vuelta a Boyaca, and claimed the mountains classification title at the Clasico RCN.
