Eight people were taken to hospital after a chlorine gas leak at Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre on April 10, 2026. The incident prompted a major emergency response and forced authorities to evacuate the facility and nearby areas.

According to officials, the gas was released after two chemicals accidentally came into contact inside the pool facility, creating an uncontrolled reaction. Dan Atkinson said emergency crews received a 911 call shortly before noon reporting a strong and irritating smell in the air that caused discomfort in the nose, mouth, and upper respiratory system.

When firefighters arrived, staff had already begun evacuating people from the building. Emergency responders quickly identified the situation as a chemical exposure and started providing first aid to those affected. Eight individuals were transported to hospital with symptoms ranging from coughing to breathing difficulties. Health officials later confirmed that all patients were in stable condition.

Specialized hazardous materials teams were deployed to handle the situation. Equipped with protective suits and breathing equipment, crews entered the building to contain and neutralize the gas. Authorities said the process involved isolating the affected area and ventilating the building to make it safe again.

As a precaution, residents and businesses in nearby areas were advised to remain indoors, close windows and doors, and turn off ventilation systems. The affected zone included surrounding streets and key locations near the facility. The public safety alert was lifted later in the afternoon once the situation was brought under control.

Police also closed several nearby roads while emergency crews worked at the scene. In addition, more than 100 people were evacuated from a nearby mosque as a safety measure.

Witnesses described smelling a strong chlorine odor before emergency sirens began to sound. Some individuals leaving the pool were seen wrapped in emergency blankets as responders assisted those affected.

City officials confirmed that the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre will remain closed until early Tuesday morning to allow for a full safety assessment and cleanup. Programs and activities scheduled at the facility have been postponed.

The exact cause of how the chemicals mixed is still under investigation. Authorities stated that incidents involving chlorine gas are rare at the facility and emphasized that safety protocols will be reviewed following the event.
