China Executes 11 Associated with Infamous Myanmar Scam Family

China has carried out the execution of 11 individuals from the Ming family, a notorious group implicated in large-scale scam operations and illegal gambling venues in Myanmar. The Zhejiang provincial court imposed sentences in September last year, citing grave charges such as murder, human trafficking, fraud, and running unlawful gambling establishments.

The Ming family was among various factions that dominated Laukkaing, a small border town in Myanmar adjacent to China. Under their rule, this once quiet, impoverished locality underwent a drastic transformation, becoming a bustling hub of casinos and illicit activities. Their criminal enterprise ensnared thousands of Chinese laborers, who were trafficked to these sites and coerced into defrauding victims abroad.

The downfall of the Ming empire occurred in 2023 when ethnic militias seized control of Laukkaing amid Myanmar's ongoing civil strife. The militias arrested the Ming family and subsequently transferred them to Chinese law enforcement. The accounts of victims, including a minor Chinese actor misled into participating in these scams, circulated extensively in China, provoking significant public outrage and intensifying demands on Myanmar's military to suppress such criminal activities.

Per China's supreme court, the Ming mafia's illegal operations generated upwards of 10 billion yuan (approximately $1.4 billion) from 2015 to 2023. Their actions resulted in the deaths of 14 Chinese nationals, inflicting injuries on many others. The court denied all appeals from the Ming family members, proceeding with the executions to dismantle their perilous scam network.
