China Carries Out Extensive Military Exercises Near Taiwan Amid Heightened Tensions

Post by : Mina Carter

China has commenced significant military drills around Taiwan, focusing on operations that simulate the takeover and blockade of crucial sites on the island. The exercises, which include personnel from the ground forces, navy, air force, and missile units, feature live-fire maneuvers and are branded as "Justice Mission 2025."

These operations follow closely on the heels of an announcement from the United States regarding an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, a decision that provoked strong backlash from Beijing, leading to sanctions imposed on American defense firms.

Taiwan's administration denounced the forthcoming drills, characterizing them as a breach of international standards. Taiwanese defense officials reported sightings of Chinese military aircraft and vessels in close proximity to its waters early Monday, prompting readiness actions from Taiwan’s own military forces.

The Chinese Eastern Theater Command, tasked with overseeing the Taiwan Strait, referred to the exercises as a “justice shield” aimed at deterring movements that support Taiwan's independence. Beijing continues to assert Taiwan as part of its territory and holds a legal stance that permits military action to prevent its secession, while publicly advocating for a peaceful reunification.

Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing accuses of exacerbating independence sentiments, has stated that Taiwan is already a sovereign entity and sees no necessity for a formal declaration of independence. In a recent statement, he underscored the need for fortifying Taiwan's defense structures to dissuade potential incursions, while vowing to uphold the current status and avoid provocations.

Public surveys in Taiwan demonstrate a prevailing consensus favoring the status quo, with most citizens neither pursuing unification with China nor formal independence.

This set of drills marks the first major military operations supervised by Yang Zhibin, who assumed command of the Eastern Theater in October. Military activities surrounding Taiwan have surged since 2022, often in response to perceived provocations, such as visits from foreign officials or major political developments within Taiwan.

In tandem, Taiwan conducts regular military exercises to prepare its populace and showcase its defense capabilities, with this year's Han Kuang drills being the most extensive in history. The island is also channeling investments into advanced military technologies, including a new air defense system.

The escalating military friction around Taiwan is also stirring regional dynamics, particularly in relations with Japan. Recently strained diplomatic ties between China and Japan have worsened, as Japanese leaders have suggested that Japan’s Self-Defense Forces might engage if China were to attack Taiwan. This assertion has triggered diplomatic protests and increased military standoffs between the two countries.
