China Conducts Rocket Exercises Near Taiwan Amid Large-scale Military Drills

China has initiated its most extensive military maneuvers in proximity to Taiwan, launching rockets into adjacent waters and surrounding the island with military vessels and aircraft. These exercises have sparked significant alarm across the region, signaling a rehearsal of a potential blockade against Taiwan in the event of conflict.

The live-fire drills conducted by the Chinese military spanned roughly 10 hours on Tuesday. Rockets were projected into the sea to the north and south of Taiwan, as fighter jets, bombers, destroyers, and amphibious assault vessels strategically positioned themselves around the island. The operation was dubbed “Justice Mission 2025” by Chinese authorities.

Taiwan's defense ministry has confirmed that Chinese live-fire activities occurred near its northern waters. Officials noted that some debris entered Taiwan's adjacent maritime zone, just outside its territorial waters. Taiwan remained vigilant to determine whether China would launch missiles over the island, mirroring earlier drills conducted in 2022.

Videos released by the Chinese military depicted mobile rocket launchers firing into the sea, machinery believed to possess the capability to target locations throughout Taiwan. Taiwanese security officials reported that China was simulating strikes on vital defense systems, including U.S.-manufactured weapons employed by Taiwan for coastline protection.

The maneuvers were executed shortly after the United States unveiled a significant new arms package for Taiwan. China is staunchly opposed to any form of foreign military assistance to the island, viewing such actions as meddling in its internal issues. Conversely, Taiwan argues that such armaments are essential for its defense.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te asserted that the island's military is prepared to safeguard the nation, emphasizing the desire to avoid conflict. He affirmed that the government will respond in a measured and responsible manner to maintain public safety.

The military exercises disrupted travel and shipping activities. Taiwan's aviation authority indicated that various flight routes were affected, though most international services remained operational. Flights to nearby islands close to China faced suspension, impacting thousands of travelers. On the water, Chinese Coast Guard and Taiwanese vessels closely shadowed each other, creating tense encounters.

Experts warn that a real blockade could trigger significant global complications. The Taiwan Strait ranks among the most vital trade channels worldwide, with trillions of dollars in goods traversing annually. Any major impediment could disrupt global supply chains and economies well beyond Asia.

In addition, China employed the drills to showcase new military equipment, including large amphibious vessels intended for troop, vehicle, and helicopter transport. Analysts interpret these exercises as reflections of China's expanding military capability and increasing self-assurance.
