Kuala Lumpur Officers Face Charges in RM10,000 Extortion Case

In a notable case within Kuala Lumpur, four police corporals have pleaded not guilty to charges related to the alleged extortion of RM10,000 from a salesman. The incident has garnered significant attention from the public. The officers denied all allegations during their appearance in the Magistrate’s Court.

Named Mohd Al Hafis Sairudin, Mohd Azmi Mohd Ghozali, Muhamad Azlan Zakaria, and Muhammad Hanif Abdul Talib, the four are charged under the Penal Code's extortion provisions. Prosecutors claim they coerced salesman Danny Goh Ngee Guan into a state of fear, suggesting he could incur a fine of at least RM50,000.

According to the charge sheet, the alleged extortion occurred on December 23, 2023, at an apartment located on Jalan Kepong, Sentul. Authorities assert that the victim paid RM10,000 due to pressure and fear of legal repercussions.

This offence falls under Section 384 of the Malaysian Penal Code, alongside Section 34, which pertains to acts executed by multiple persons with shared intent. If found guilty, the accused could face up to ten years in prison, along with fines and possibly whipping.

During the court session, Deputy Public Prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa contested the bail, emphasizing that the charge is non-bailable. In defense, counsel Ahmad Ikram Ab Halim argued for the accused, highlighting their full cooperation with the investigation and their roles as primary earners for their families.

After reviewing the arguments from both sides, Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad approved bail set at RM8,000 for each officer, along with strict conditions including monthly check-ins at a nearby police station and restrictions on contacting anyone involved in the case.

This case has sparked discussions around the themes of law enforcement accountability and public confidence. Legal proceedings are set to continue, with the next court mention scheduled for July 8 to review ongoing developments.
