Thailand and Cambodia Reach Ceasefire to Halt Weeks of Intense Border Violence

Thailand and Cambodia have successfully negotiated a ceasefire aimed at halting the weeks of severe fighting along their contested border, which had escalated to the worst violence in years. This agreement, implemented on December 27, took effect promptly at noon on the same day. The hostilities involved air missions, rocket assaults, and heavy artillery, instilling dread in border communities on both sides.

The ceasefire was publicly announced through a joint statement from the defense ministers of both nations, stating that troops would remain in their current locations to prevent further escalation. Particularly severe violence was logged in Cambodia’s Banteay Meanchey province, where smoke billowed from airstrikes earlier this month. Both nations accused one another of instigating the hostilities, but the situation quickly spiraled out of control. The infrastructure of roads, schools, and businesses in the border territory suffered significantly, severely disrupting the daily routines of countless civilians.
