Two 19-year-old men have been charged after a taxi driver was shot dead in North Battleford
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned TVK leader Vijay for interrogation concerning the tragic stampede in Karur. He is expected to appear on Monday, January 12, as mandated following a Supreme Court directive for a CBI probe into the incident.
The disaster unfolded during Vijay's rally on September 27, leading to the loss of 41 lives and injuries to over 60 individuals. The gathering exceeded 30,000 attendees at a site meant for about 10,000, with officials acknowledging severe lapses in security measures and inadequate provision of food and drinking water.
Vijay's anticipated arrival at noon was delayed until around 7 pm, further inflating the crowd's anticipation. His approach reportedly incited chaos, with attendees resorting to climbing trees, rooftops, and power lines, prompting authorities to cut off electricity for safety. When he finally arrived, the throng surged, causing many to faint and leading to a police lathi charge to restore order.
In the wake of this tragedy, Vijay pledged a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for each victim's family and Rs 2 lakh for the injured. He also halted his statewide tour in response to the incident.
Mathiyazhagan, the TVK Karur West District Secretary, was arrested for his failure to ensure safety protocols but was released shortly after, as the court declined to extend his custody.
Over a month post-tragedy, Vijay met with victims' families at a resort in Mamallapuram, near Chennai. He expressed remorse for the disaster as well as for his failure to visit Karur immediately after the event, stating to the families, “I felt guilty for not being here. Now that I’ve met you, I can look ahead.”
