India’s aviation regulators are probing an incident involving an Air India Airbus A350 that experienced engine damage after ingesting a cargo container during taxiing at Delhi airport.
The flight, bound for New York, had to return to Delhi shortly after take-off due to the temporary closure of Iranian airspace. After a safe landing, the aircraft was taxiing to its parking bay with approximately 240 passengers on board when the right engine sucked in the container amidst heavy fog.
Authorities indicated that the cargo container accidentally fell from a ground vehicle onto the taxiway. The operator, who was transporting luggage and cargo, noticed the approaching plane and left the cargo behind as it moved away.
Aviation officials confirmed that debris was cleared from the taxiway, with the damaged aircraft being towed to a designated area. Official photos indicate visible damage to the engine casing and fan blades.
This incident has sparked concerns regarding ground safety at airports in India. Previous audits have pointed out safety issues including worn runway markings, crew fatigue, insufficient maintenance, and unauthorized access to cockpits.
Air India has stated that the affected A350 is currently grounded for repairs, warning of potential disruptions to certain long-haul routes, particularly to New York and London. The airline currently operates six A350 aircraft on major international routes.
