2nd Arrest Made In Calgary South Asian Extortion Probe

Post by : Sophia Matthew

Police in Calgary have made a second arrest in an ongoing investigation into extortion cases targeting members of the South Asian community. Authorities say the latest arrest marks an important step in a complex probe involving threats, shootings, and organized criminal activity.

According to the Calgary Police Service, the case began to develop after officers stopped a vehicle on March 7 in the city’s northeast. The vehicle matched the description of one linked to an earlier shooting that took place on March 4 in the Saddleridge area. During the stop, police seized the vehicle and collected evidence, which later helped investigators connect multiple incidents and suspects.

Nearly a month after the traffic stop, police arrested a 21-year-old man identified as Jaskaran Singh. He has been charged with discharging a firearm with intent. Investigators believe he was involved in a shooting connected to extortion activities targeting individuals within the South Asian community.

Police officials described the arrest as a significant development in the case. They said the investigation is ongoing and efforts are continuing to identify others who may be involved in similar crimes.

This is the second arrest made in the same investigation within a week. Earlier, on April 1, another suspect, Rana Cheema, 45, was charged with extortion and making threats. Authorities believe both arrests are connected to a broader pattern of criminal activity.

Over the past two years, extortion cases involving members of the South Asian community have increased in parts of Western Canada, including Calgary and Edmonton. These cases often involve threats delivered through phone calls or social media, sometimes demanding money and followed by acts of violence such as shootings.

Police say there have been at least 41 reported extortion attempts in Calgary since January 2025. These include multiple shootings targeting homes, businesses, and vehicles, although no injuries have been reported so far. Officials say the incidents have created fear and concern within the community.

Investigators have also noted that some criminal networks may be targeting newly arrived immigrants, including international students and workers, and involving them in illegal activities. Law enforcement agencies across provinces are now working together to address the issue more effectively.

Police are urging anyone who has experienced extortion or received threats to come forward and report the incidents. They emphasize that community cooperation is essential to stopping these crimes and ensuring public safety.
