Intensified Probe into Vehicle Smuggling Between Bhutan and India

The investigation into cross-border vehicle smuggling has intensified, with a Bhutan customs delegation arriving in Kerala to work alongside Indian authorities. This collaboration is part of Operation Numkhor, a comprehensive probe addressing illegal imports that has caught national attention.

Led by senior officials from Bhutan's customs department, the team is engaging in discussions with Indian representatives in Munnar. Their discussions are focused on sharing intelligence and strategizing for future actions against the suspected smuggling operations.

The inquiry targets vehicles allegedly imported unlawfully from Bhutan into India, which were subsequently registered using fraudulent methods. Authorities suspect many of these vehicles have traveled through northeastern states before being deployed across different areas in India.

Operation Numkhor has already yielded significant results, with numerous luxury cars and premium motorcycles seized in Kerala. Some of these vehicles have ties to high-profile individuals, drawing further media coverage to the case.

Estimates suggest that close to 15,000 vehicles may have been smuggled into India over the years, leading to tax evasion amounting to crores of rupees. Investigators have flagged hundreds of dubious registrations, especially in states like Assam.

The Enforcement Directorate has also taken an interest in the case, probing potential money laundering connections. The multi-agency involvement underscores both the complexity and the extensive nature of this operation.

Officials emphasize that the ongoing partnership between Bhutan and India is essential for verifying vehicle origin documentation and enhancing enforcement actions. The investigation is set to proceed with coordinated efforts targeted at dismantling the smuggling ring and curbing future violations.
