The Australian government has rescinded the visa of a British citizen after he faced charges related to showcasing a prohibited Nazi symbol and disseminating antisemitic content on social media. The 43-year-old, residing in Queensland, was charged on December 8 for exhibiting the Nazi Hakenkreuz, a variant of the swastika, and endorsing “pro-Nazi sentiments directed at the Jewish community” on two X accounts from October to November. Following the revocation of his visa, he has been placed in immigration detention and will be deported unless he opts to leave voluntarily.
Home Affairs Minister Bourke emphasized that individuals visiting Australia are guests, and those promoting hate are not welcome. “If someone arrives with the intent of spreading hate, they should depart,” he remarked.
This decision comes after a mass shooting incident during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach on December 14, which tragically resulted in 15 fatalities. The attack has heightened calls for enhanced governmental measures against antisemitism and hate crimes.
Minister Bourke additionally revealed plans to simplify the process for initiating legal actions against antisemitic activities. Currently, authorities must demonstrate that a person’s actions have negatively affected the community to terminate a visa. Bourke contended that “the incitement of hate alone should suffice,” asserting that new legislation will empower him to act more effectively in such matters.
