Pongthai Taiyothin, the Inspector-General of Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, took part in the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry. This session was geared towards preparing for the upcoming Special ASEAN Ministers Meeting, primarily centered on urgent food security challenges impacting the region.
During the discussions, officials noted how ongoing geopolitical issues in the Middle East are affecting agriculture across ASEAN. The spike in energy costs, disruptions to fertilizer supply chains, and increased logistical expenses are posing threats to food production and stability in various member states.
Thailand called attention to its reliance on imported fertilizers, which fulfill nearly all of its domestic needs. Consequently, volatility in global markets has raised production costs and restricted access to vital agricultural inputs for local farmers.
In response to these challenges, Thailand is employing a strategic plan aimed at stabilizing food production. Initial actions include ensuring an adequate fertilizer supply and supporting efficient usage, such as promoting organic fertilizers to help lessen costs.
Short-term initiatives will advocate for biofertilizers, precision agriculture technologies, and renewable energy solutions to boost efficiency. In the medium term, there will be a focus on research, soil enhancement, and adopting sustainable farming practices aligned with the Bio-Circular-Green framework.
Members of ASEAN shared insights about their national circumstances and explored coordinated efforts to address these challenges. The meeting also reviewed systems like the ASEAN Emergency Food Reserve and regional frameworks aimed at reinforcing food security.
Thailand underscored the necessity of maintaining the flow of crucial goods, particularly food and agricultural resources, while fostering inter-sectoral collaboration. The ongoing dialogue aims to create a robust regional food system that can effectively tackle both current and forthcoming challenges.
