Massive $1.8 Billion Powerball Jackpot Won in Arkansas

Post by : Bianca Hayes

A lucky lottery player in Arkansas experienced an early Christmas gift as a single Powerball ticket sold near Little Rock hit an astonishing jackpot exceeding $1.8 billion, marking a historic moment as the second-largest prize in US lottery history.

This winning ticket successfully matched all five white balls along with the Powerball during Wednesday night’s Christmas Eve drawing, ending a nearly three-month period without any jackpot winners in the popular multi-state game.

Winning Ticket Secured in Cabot

The ticket was acquired at a Murphy USA gas station located in Cabot, a small town northeast of Little Rock with a community of approximately 27,000 residents. Its proximity to a major interstate increases the likelihood that the fortunate winner may actually be a traveler passing through.

Murphy USA spokesperson Alejandra Barron reported a surge of customers visiting their locations on Christmas Eve, many of whom were specifically looking to purchase Powerball tickets. Notably, this isn’t the first significant win for the chain; a Murphy Express in Sugar Land, Texas, sold a winning Mega Millions ticket worth $800 million in 2024.

Community Buzzing with Curiosity

Mayor Ken Kincade of Cabot noted that the town is buzzing with excitement and intrigue.

“Everyone’s discussing it,” he mentioned. “It’s all over social media. People are guessing who the winner could possibly be.”

While the mayor hopes for a local winner, he acknowledged the potential for the winner to be just a passing traveler due to the store’s convenient location.

Next Steps for the Lucky Winner

As per the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery guidelines, the winner has a timeframe of 180 days, or about six months, to come forward and claim their winnings. Arkansas laws allow individuals winning over $500,000 to keep their identities confidential for up to three years, although this limit decreases to six months for elected officials or their close family members.

Additionally, the winner will be subject to considerable tax deductions. Arkansas’ top individual income tax rate stands at 3.9%. If the winner opts for a lump-sum cash option estimated at around $834.9 million, state taxes alone would surpass $32 million. Any overdue taxes, child support, or outstanding legal judgments could also be deducted from the prize.

A Unique Christmas Eve Win

This is the first occasion a Powerball jackpot has been won on Christmas Eve since 2011. The game has seen victories on Christmas Day four times, with the latest win occurring in 2013, according to officials.

With odds of 1 in 292.2 million, Powerball is crafted to deliver extraordinary jackpots. In 2015, the game adjusted its odds to facilitate record-setting prizes while improving chances for smaller wins.

Powerball tickets are sold for $2 each across 45 states, along with Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Winning Numbers

The drawn numbers for Christmas Eve were 04, 25, 31, 52, and 59, along with the Powerball number 19.

For now, Arkansas awaits the moment the mystery winner decides to claim one of the largest lottery prizes in American history.
