Dubai – Filipino tennis prodigy Alex Eala is gearing up for an exciting 2026 season, leveraging her impressive achievements from 2025 that marked her entry into the WTA Top 50 for the first time. The 20-year-old is scheduled to kick off her season at the ASB Classic in Auckland this January as she seeks to solidify her position among tennis’s up-and-coming stars.

Recently, Eala had the honor of serving as a flag-bearer for the Philippines during the opening ceremony of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, a proud moment she shared alongside volleyball star Bryan Bagunas at Rajamangala Stadium. “This was a thrilling experience and such an honor to represent our nation,” she said.

Currently positioned at No. 52, Eala will take the fourth seed at the WTA 250 event in Auckland. The tournament will feature world No. 14 Elina Svitolina, as well as Emma Navarro (15), Iva Jovic (35), and Janice Tjen (53) among the top contenders. The field also welcomes tennis icons Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens entering through wildcards, alongside Britain’s Katie Boulter.

Defending champion Clara Tauson will bypass Auckland to participate in Brisbane, while Naomi Osaka, who was the runner-up in 2025, is scheduled for the United Cup. For Eala, achieving the seeded position is a career milestone, reflecting her rapid ascent from No. 147 in 2024, primarily competing in lower-tier tournaments.

With her formidable baseline prowess, mental resilience, and increasing global experience, Eala is not only a representative of the Philippines but is also becoming a significant player to follow on the WTA tour for 2026. Her performance in Auckland will be critical in setting the tone for what is anticipated to be another breakthrough year.
