Canada May Raise Taxes to Boost Defence Spend
Report warns Canadians could face tax hikes as Ottawa seeks funding to meet rising defence spending
Two people have been charged in connection with a shocking Alberta highway shooting that killed a young man near Edmonton. Police have described the incident as a “senseless crime” that has deeply affected the local community. The main keyword, Alberta highway shooting, highlights the seriousness of this tragic case.
The incident took place on March 14 along the busy QEII Highway near Leduc. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the victim, Barinder Singh, was travelling with two friends when a pickup truck pulled up beside their car. There was a brief and friendly interaction between the two vehicles, including a hand gesture that appeared to be a peace sign.
However, moments later, shots were fired from the truck. Singh was hit in the neck. Despite the injury, he and his friends managed to safely stop the vehicle. His friends tried to help him and called emergency services, but he died shortly after due to heavy blood loss.
Police say the two groups did not know each other, and the attack appears to be random. Investigators have ruled out robbery, road rage, and gang initiation as reasons for the shooting. They also confirmed that the crime was not racially motivated and that the victim was not involved in any criminal activity.
Authorities have arrested two suspects in the case. Jimmy Gassner, aged 18, has been charged with second-degree murder and is believed to have fired the shots. Deon Libsekil, aged 23, has also been charged with second-degree murder and as an accessory after the fact. Both suspects were already known to police for previous matters.
Officials say all suspects linked to the Alberta highway shooting have now been identified and charged. The investigation is still ongoing, and police are working to understand the exact motive behind the attack.
Police have also reached out to Singh’s family, who are currently outside Canada, and are offering support during this difficult time. Authorities reassured the public that such random acts of violence are rare, but the case remains a reminder of the need for continued vigilance and safety on the roads.
